Strong Girls will break glass ceilings.
Strong Women will show them the ladder.

Learn about our work

We are reinventing mentoring with 10 years of proven results to shore up strength in girls from under-resourced communities by surrounding them with a community of strong women.

Our Mission

Strong Women, Strong Girls empowers girls to imagine a broader future through a curriculum grounded on female role models delivered by college women mentors, who are themselves mentored by professional women.

Our Story

Lindsay Hyde founded SWSG as a student group while she was a freshman at Harvard University in 2000. In its first year, SWSG engaged six women and they mentored 30 girls. Since that time, requests from parents, schools, and community members have driven the program’s rapid growth.

In 2004, SWSG incorporated as a non-profit in Boston, MA and launched volunteer chapters on additional college campuses. In 2006, SWSG launched its first expansion office in Pittsburgh, PA. Demand for SWSG programming has continued to grow. In response, SWSG has expanded to serve more girls and in 2013-2014, SWSG provided programming to over 1,400 girls in Boston, Pittsburgh and several pilot programs at over 100 school and community center partner sites.

2014 marked our ten year anniversary as a nonprofit organization, and we have much to celebrate. We even have girls who participated in our program when they were in elementary school, now in college, mentoring back with us in the very same communities they came from. This is practical proof that our model and our mission work, and that our unique approach provides genuine, long lasting value to the girls involved in our programming and the communities we serve.
