As many professional women can attest, we have had to work harder, scratch and crawl and fight the glass ceiling to achieve success. I don’t want future generations to struggle with the double standard and that is why I am inspired to help college-aged women through mentoring.
I was introduced to SWSG’s Mentor2Mentor (M2M) program by the director of our local Small Business Development Center. Although I have participated for only three months it has been a rewarding experience.
I was pleased to be matched with Alyssa, a second year student at Duquesne University. Alyssa, as did all the potential mentees, made an impression on me. During our speed interviews I learned that Alyssa was interested in becoming a “professional feminist” and that hit a nerve. I have since been asked, “what is a ‘professional feminist‘?” I don’t know the answer, but I do know Alyssa’s vocation is dedicated to helping women. She was not sure how to do that and thus we began our relationship with the challenge of defining a path.
Alyssa wanted to create a self-designed undergrad major with a long-term goal of pursuing a law degree, both with an emphasis on women’s issues. Through our meetings I helped her identify university contacts that could provide guidance. Alyssa targeted several faculty members and was able to meet with the Assistant Dean of Students and Vice Dean of the Evening Division.
