“Don’t you remember Are You There God? Its Me Margaret?!”
“NO, what about Goosebumps?!”
“Ah! Those were the best – remember the Boxcar Children?”
Recently, in the office it was a trip down book memory lane. We spent a good 20 minutes recounting the stories that we read in school, for summer reading, and throughout our pre-adolescence. What sparked this recounting, you may ask? Well, get out those reading specs, because you’re in for a treat.
First Book is an organization that provides access to brand new books to children. To date, First Book has distributed more than 80 million books and educational resources to programs and schools serving children from low-income families throughout the United States and Canada. First Book is transforming the lives of children in need and elevating the quality of education by making new, high-quality books available on an ongoing basis.
First Book reached out to Strong Women, Strong Girls- Boston in the late spring. In partnership with Jet Blue, they are providing 5 SWSG sites with free books for our girls in honor of Women’s History Month! Considering the stats that those who don’t read proficiently by third grade are four times more likely to leave [high] school without a diploma than proficient readers – we are so thankful to First Book and Jet Blue for helping us get new books in the hands of our girls. Thank you!
What books impacted you as a child? Which book has you saying, “You HAVE to read this?”
