Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning

What is MEL?

MEL, or Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning, starts with data – but it’s so much more than that! SWSG Pittsburgh uses MEL to learn detailed impact information about our programs and participants, and we use MEL reporting techniques to share it out with our community. We want to share our MEL expertise with you! Learn how data and evaluation can make a difference in your everyday life and how you can use it to be more effective, personally and professionally!

Data is political and the ways that we collect data often leave some groups of people out which paints an inaccurate picture of our world. Before the 2016 election, non-response bias left out large groups of voters, and pollsters reported inaccurate predictions for the U.S. presidential election. For this year’s census, many experts have explained how a citizenship question would collect inaccurate data and could cause harm to immigrants in the U.S. In this session learn about how to get good data without leaving people out or causing harm to groups that are marginalized.
