This past Thursday, Strong Women, Strong Girls Boston office attended a special summertime event called Jump Into Peace. Jump into Peace is an annual celebration of girlhood, peace, and community. This event is held by the office of SWSG’s special advisor and Boston City Councilor at Large, Ayanna Pressley. Jump into Peace took place at Malcolm X Park in Roxbury and brought together youth groups, community partners, parents, neighborhood representatives, and local politicians, including Boston Mayor Marty Walsh. Highlights of the event included a group warm-up, double dutch, inclusive jump-roping, music, food, a peace-building activity, addresses from Councilor Pressley and Mayor Walsh, and community partner tables.
Councilor Pressley first started this event three years ago to bring the conversation of violence and violence prevention to women and young girls. It is shown that women, as a whole, are often left out of conversations involving violence and Councilor Pressley wanted to create an enjoyable way to get girls and young women involved in this topic. Councilor Pressley wanted to involve double dutch jump roping, hence the name Jump Into Peace because of her experiences as a young girl in an inner city neighborhood. “As a young girl, double dutch represented a freedom from everyday stresses, deeply rooted friendships with other girls in my neighborhood, and peace in an otherwise chaotic inner city environment.”
SWSG Boston is a proud supporter of the event and are excited to have been able to join this strong community of women that afternoon.
