Last week, the Tufts chapter went out into the community to spread holiday cheer and tell people what we’re all about. We wrapped presents for donations at Henry Bear’s Park, a children’s toy store, in Porter Square, and we are so grateful to them for having us there all day taking up space!
I worked in the morning from 10-2, while my co-director Alex covered the later shift from 2-6. Though neither of us is an expert present-wrapper, we were pleasantly surprised to see that many of our mentors were. They loved helping those who needed their presents wrapped, and it was also pretty fun just getting to hang out with each other (and especially getting to know mentors I didn’t really know before!)
Even more inspiring was the community’s response to our presence and Strong Women, Strong Girls in general. Many wanted to know about the type of work we’re doing in the Somerville/Medford area, and once they heard about our curriculum and mission, they were incredibly enthusiastic about donating and having conversations about the importance of community service. We even had one woman come in who had worked at one of our sites with a different group and could appreciate the organization!
Community Wraps was a great last bonding/fundraising event of the semester, and we hope to make it an SWSG Tufts tradition, one of the Tufts’ chapter’s first!
