The mission of Strong Women, Strong Girls is to utilize the lessons learned from strong women throughout history to encourage girls and young women to become strong women themselves. By building communities of women committed to supporting positive social change, Strong Women, Strong Girls works to create cycles of mutual empowerment for women and girls.
At the year’s Jump into Spring, program directors in Boston, Pittsburgh, and South Florida watched the SWSG mission come alive.
In Boston, SWSG’s program managers, Mikki Pugh and Kenyora Johnson, said it was inspiring to see how eager the girls were to connect and engage with our strong community of women from staff to performers to Boston City Councilor, Ayanna Pressley. The girls even asked for Mikki’s autograph! In addition, performances by Annual Snowfall, Boston College’s F.I.S.T.S. (Females Incorporated Sisterhood Through Step), and The Genki Sparks were shining examples of several of the skills that we highlight in our curriculum. They proudly displayed their own unique talents and abilities: cultural diversity, determination and perseverance, and critical thinking.
Pittsburgh program managers, Tiara Whitfield and Jenny Schaeffer, were thrilled that the girls had the opportunity to meet and engage with Annie Clark, a girl featured in our 2012 curriculum for determination and perseverance. They found the energy electric as women and girls shared a day participating in empowering activities.
In South Florida, program manager Adele Coble shared an email that a girl sent to her Barry University mentors. In the email the girl wrote that Jump into Spring was “the best field trip” and she “will never forget that day” with her mentors.
