As a the Co-Director of Northeastern University Chapter of Strong Women, Strong Girls, Jennifer engages 65 college women as volunteer mentors to over 150 low-income girls throughout Greater Boston. In just two months, Jennifer worked with staff, her Co-Director Heather Belanger, and Chapter Executive Board to implement a new chapter structure on campus. This new structure allowed her chapter to engage over 50% more college women as volunteer mentors while maintaining a strong sense of community. As a result, 20 additional college women served mentors empowering 50 additional girls at four new partner sites.
Jennifer serves as a catalyst whose dedication and skills ensures the transformative power of Strong Women, Strong Girls is realized through both the empowerment of young girls and the development of their mentors’ leadership skills. As Chapter Director, Jennifer:
- Supports strong mentors by recruiting and orientating 65 of her peers who volunteer as mentors to girls, coordinating weekly meetings and sharing best practices and trouble-shooting challenges.
- Implements strong programming by planning and implementing field trips and ensuring all program data is collected for over 150 girls.
- Coordinates a strong chapter by setting the direction of her chapter, cultivating new leaders, managing finances and raising awareness on campus.
On top of all of this, Jennifer mentors a group of 10-12 girls once a week for 90 minutes. She also serves a one of Strong Women, Strong Girls’ Student Members of the National Board of Directors.
The Classy Awards is the largest philanthropic awards ceremony in the country, recognizing the most outstanding philanthropic achievements by charities, businesses and individuals nationwide. The award celebrates an undergraduate student or student-run college organization that has most powerfully put the idealism and energy of youth to work in service of others. The winner of this Classy Award will demonstrate a willingness to think big, to take on important social challenges, and to do so with an unflappable belief in the individual’s ability to effect dramatic change. Public voting is open until August 26, 2011. The top ten nominees with the most votes for each category proceed to the final round of judging. Winners are announced live at the Stay Classy Awards in San Diego, CA on September 17, 2011.
